National Housing Design Award

'REAL STRENGTH of character which establishes a "sense of place" in an area of derelict and used sites close to the city centre is what distinguishes this project. It has set a standard that future developments could well emulate and so in turn could achieve an unproved setting for Charter Place.'

'It is one of a small but growing number of schemes within the provinces aimed at the "niche" in the market for the young and upwardly mobile at affordible prices. The 36 homes are characterised by a strong form, a simple use of materials and a refinement of external detail rarely seen in private developments. The external landscaping with a central gazebo acting as a locus for the scheme, was liked by the assessors.'

Foreword
'Housing design demands a high level of skill and presents a continuing challenge. In recent years new requirements have emerged: for housing for young people setting up home for the first time, for retired people - in particular those who are frail - and for those who are moving from institutions into the community. With many schemes now involving the redevelopment of land or the renovation of existing buildings, housing has an important part to play in regenerating the fabric of our towns and cities. We congratulate the award winners whose schemes feature in this special publication. The projects illustrate the high standard and the range of diversity now being achieved in housing design.'
